X2 with Steelheadz, I had the same problem with an 85' Thunderbird with a factory keyless entry and security system, if the mechanic tripped the alarm or it lost it's pin code then the security system could be shutting off the power to your fuel injectors and/or your spark.

Yeah 20 psi's probably perfect man, driving a 2 wheel drive XJ has it's advantages, you figure out alot of ways to try and keep from gettin stuck lol

Go with a bigger wider set of tires, even a set of 30x9.50's are much better than the stock 225/75/15's our XJ's come with. Also if you would like try lowering the air pressure in your tires before you hit the trail, makes the footprint even wider which increases your traction in sugar sand like...

Could be the u-joints like chuck said, and I know that front brakes can make a clunking sound at times, especially under hard braking. Also check your suspension, could be your shocks bottoming out when you take corners or take off and brake hard.

I'd check that fuel pressure regulator too man, if the heat wrap on the fuel rail doesn't solve it. I replaced the regulator a little while ago on a 90' Ranger that had the same symptoms you described, runs great now.

I was just about to say check the crankshaft position sensor, im actually goin through this problem with a GMC 3500 that my g/f drives, when that sensor goes you can forget about the engine cranking lol
