    poly fuel tank questions

My 87 has a factory poly 20 gallon tank. It's like Bounty said. There is only about an inch between it and the shackle on the driver's side. I don't know about the 90, but the 87 came with 2 different tanks. The 14.5 even had a smaller skid plate. I'm pretty sure the 15 to 20 gallon conversion...

    replacing 4.2L 6 with a 304 V8

A friend of mine went through that a couple of years ago. I can't remember all the details, but here's what I remember. First he had fits with the wiring harness. Some of the wiring had to be lengthened because it was on the wrong side. Also, some of it that went to the side of the 4.2 had to go...

    carb change related questions

What's it idle at? Mine is only around 750 rpm. I don't understand the 3 grand and 5 grand. By it dropping with the brake stepped on, have you disconnected the hose going to the brake booster and plugged it to see if that's your leak?

    EGR questions

I have an 87 4.2 and the EGR was disabled or broken when I got the Jeep. Just to test it, I removed it and put a plate over where it went. Everything ran fine. In fact, mine ran better because the previous owner didn't believe in gaskets. It was one major vacuum leak. Basically, all the EGR...

    AX15 bearing

Attempted to pull the rear bearing from the input shaft today using a press and bearing splitter. First the splitter wouldn't fit between the bearing and first gear. There is a very small amount of separation to work with there. We finally got it to grip. Next we applied the 25 ton press. The...

    4.2 power

You've gone from 180hp, I think, to about 112hp with the 88. The tires and the 3.07 gears are killing it somewhat too.

    Transmission swap

The Wrangler disk and pressure plate are the same part number from 87 to 99. I have an 89 AX15 in my 87. I used the same flywheel as I was told to match the flywheel to the motor. That may need some research to make sure. It will also require that you get a pilot bushing machined or special...

    shifter

I took two flat headed screws and cut them off, leaving about a quarter inch of threads. Then I put the shifter in a vise, with the screws positioned at the tabs and tightened the vise until the tabs were both pushed in. They don't go in very far. Then I took a hammer and worn out screw driver...

My luck ran out. Transmission problem.

I wish it hadn't been so stinkin' hungry.

My luck ran out. Transmission problem.

It does look like they were squashed doesn't it? Actually, they are broken off. All the pieces were in the bottom of the transmission. One tooth was even nearly complete.

My luck ran out. Transmission problem.

Well, here's what happened. Any ideas why this would break? The counter 5th gear I replaced about a year ago still looks good.

My luck ran out. Transmission problem.

That's a good idea. I'll have to check the thickness of it and see if I can find one. That should have been designed with one anyway.

My luck ran out. Transmission problem.

Any educated guesses out there? I'm getting ready to drop the transmission again. This is getting old. I just replaced an oil soaked clutch a few months ago. When I bought the transmission, it was needing help. After rebuilding it, putting it in, and taking it out about 3 times, I found a...

My luck ran out. Transmission problem.

The jeep's been running good for several months. Today it gave me a new noise. On the way home, running in 5th gear, I started hearing a loud rattling noise and felt it in my shifter. It goes away when I downshift to 4th. I have a good idea what it is, but want to see what others say. It's an AX15.

    Transmission Leaking

If you're sure it's the transmission, it is probably coming from the input seal. You have to drop the transmission to fix. If you're not sure it's the transmission, it could be the valve cover, leak around the oil pressure sensor, leak around the oil filter, or possibly even rear main seal. I...

    Internal slave to external slave

I have that same part on an 89 transmission. It's the same bolt pattern and serves me like it's supposed to be on there.

    transfer case repairs

I agree with Bounty. I'm not that mechanically inclined, but tore mine down, diagnosed it, and repaired it with no problem. All mine needed were some neoprene sleeves on the shift fork. While in it, I replaced the bearings and checked gears and the chain. Putting it back together, I realized the...

    AX-15 Shifter

A little late now, but I used a vise. I had 2 small bolts that I cut off to leave about 1/4" of thread and used those in the vise to press in on those tabs. When they were in, I pulled on the shaft until it came apart.
