    Yep, tell em you got a 77 CJ5 with a 304. If you want any more power you can always bolt in a 360 or 401 too, the exterior dimensions are the same, just change the flywheel, shared a lot of internal parts too.

    In those years horsepower was varied by the amount of smog gear that was attached to the motor, and what the manufacturers published for the insurance companies to believe, I would not go by those ratings. Go by the seat of your pants, is it enough to move the jeep around and do what you want?

    Sounds like maybe the bearings in the mainshaft are going bad, or the pilot bushing is worn out, which probably means that the mainshaft bearings are going bad too. Either way it sounds like a transmission pull is in order to check for bad parts.

    I don't think the engines had a date stamp on them, if it has the 304 on the side of the block they were all the same internally.     4wd shifting problems on 1982 CJ7??

    Does the jeep have a transfer case drop? If so, the shifter may be hitting the tub and not engaging properly when you pull it all the way back, pull up the 4wd shifter boot and look at the clearance between the lever and the floor board, you might have to notch the floor board a little to clear...
