Xfer Case replaced = shift setup problem?

No drop kit, and yes it was a 242! Bizarre!

Xfer Case replaced = shift setup problem?

Yes it is. I misspoke; when the shifter is in 4lo the vehicle seems to be in 2wd. Ok, when I pulled into the garage I seemed to be in 2wd with the shifter at 4lo. So I unhooked the linkage rod attached to the lever on the xfer case. I then slid the shifter to 2wd and went back underneath...

Xfer Case replaced = shift setup problem?

So if my shift lever starts with 2wd and the opposite end is 4H, then I need to manually shift the xfer case to the opposite end and rehook the linkage. I just can't figure out how it got like this; I never moved the linkage (that I remember!!!!) ;-)

Xfer Case replaced = shift setup problem?

If that's true, then where is 2wd? I have the Select-trac with the full time 4wd if that makes any difference.

Xfer Case replaced = shift setup problem?

Thanks for the reply, and it makes perfect sense with only one question: how do you put the t case in 4 low - how do you know where that position is? By lever, I'm assuming you mean the hand lever in the console.

Xfer Case replaced = shift setup problem?

I replaced a demolished xfer case and u joints and odd bits in our 88 XJ. When I got her all together, fired it up and carefully drove up the street it seemed to be sluggish, as though it's in 4wd. Messing around, I discovered that when the 4wd shifter is in 4H I believe I'm in 2wd! I'm not sure...

Hey; great name! ;-) Thanks, and greetings! I'm just getting ready to have the harness reworked for the 6.0 while I clean, paint with POR 15 and eliminate wiring. It's tough while working and going to grad school! Here's where I'll be posting pics: Vacation Photos

Ok; I won't ask! ;-) Let me know if you're every swinging through, and you can stops by to see the mess and do the introduction thing! This will take me some time, but I'm not sure I'll be up for any major trails. For one thing, I have no experience wheeling, and I'm not really building a...

Well, on divorced teacher salary it's not easy - verrrrrrry slow! Actually, I have about 5,000 in the jeep and engine/transmission with only 29,000 miles on it, so I figure I'm ahead of the game in my book. I'm using the NP231 with a SYE, and stock D35/D30s with 4:10 gearing for now. (Nobody...

Thank you! It's an '88 Yj, and here are the pics. The first is in August, and then the next 3 are over the last 3 weeks. I teach high school, and go to grad school, so my "fun" time has to be squeezed in the middle, which is right now! :-)

Hi gang; I'm glad to have found this list. I hope to learn from everybody's experience and knowledge. Waited till I was in my 50s to finally get a Jeep, and I love it! Am currently swapping a Vortec 6.0 into it, so I'm learning mechanics as I go! Don't know what I can offer the list, but...
