Is propane good enough for heating stuck bolts?

About to take out the leaf springs on the old XJ and I've spent a couple weeks now heating the bolt heads with propane and soaking in PB before I start in on em. I'll spend like 5 mins or more a bolt just heating right on it but it still doesn't seem like it gets the thing hot all the way...

2 XJ questions and an identify this picture contest

    1) Are the front and rear leaf spring bushings on a '96 XJ the same part? 2) My front sway bar measures 1.014 in or 25.75mm diameter. The bushings that attach it to the frame (on rockauto) are sold in 23, 24, 26, and 26.5 mm sizes. I would be looking for the 26mm? 3) and finally..what are...

    Leaf springs and shocks

Thanks JPN. Not going to like spending the extra money but in the end I'll be happier with better shocks. The only Bilsteins I've found so far are the heavy duty 4600 series for about $68 per. Is that the functionality I should be aiming for...something in the way of heavy duty? I'm only...

Need some direction on getting an impact wrench

Thanks for all the advice. Wish I could afford one of the batt types. I found a good deal on a slightly used 1/2" 800 ft lb pneumatic Husky from HD. I'll prob end up going with that one unless I hear some bad advice about it.

Bad wheel bearing / hub assembly

I'm dealing with an '02 Volvo S80 that's making a really loud whirring sound from the front pass wheel area that only gets louder the faster you go. After getting advice that it might be a bad wheel bearing I tested it by getting up to speed then steering left and right. The sound keeps up...

Need some direction on getting an impact wrench

What's a good impact gun for a decent price that will hold up well for a weekend warrior like myself? Probably be used less than 10 times a year. Harbor Freight had some for about $43 from Central Pneumatics that did something like 550 ft lbs. Although I'm not familiar with CP that one...

    Leaf springs and shocks

Couple questions. I'm replacing the bushings/shackles on the old '96 XJ leaf springs and I'm not sure how to go about disconnecting everything. Since the springs are under load I just don't want to jump into taking things apart on my first go round here. So do I just basically jack the...

Replacing upper and lower control arms on a '96 XJ

Yeah man the utube tuts have taught me at least half of what I know! someone was suggesting I go with adjustable arms. Is there an advantage to the adjustables if I'm just going for a stock OE replacement? My rig is all stock btw.

What's up with Gabriel Pro Guard Shocks?

I wanting to replace the shocks on the old '96 XJ and I'm wondering about these Gabriel Pro Guards I've found. My rig is all stock and I'm just looking for a good quality shock that gives just OE performance. Hardly ever off road. On websites these Pro Guards are listed between 'economy'...

Replacing upper and lower control arms on a '96 XJ

I'm about to replace both the upper and lower front control arms on my XJ and was wondering if there was any advice before I got started. Far as I can tell I just need to take a couple days spraying some PB on the bolts before I do the job and then just yank em out and put the new ones in...

The old XJ is wafting a bit tinky

'96 XJ here and after a summer's worth of a/c use the old gal is smelling a little musty so i got some aerosol spray duct cleaner. Part of the procedure is spraying the alcohol mixture in through the fresh air intake grill. When I took the grill and wiper arms off to get a better shot...

What's up with cars sold at auction houses?

So what IS up with these vehicles? How do they get there? Are they rejects somehow from other lots? I have a friend who can let me buy one through a local auction plus $100 so not a bad deal considering I'd be getting thousands off. Are these vehicles worth looking into or should just I...

Ins and outs of an idler pulley

So on a '96 XJ 4.0 I believe the pulley you adjust for belt tension is called an idler pulley, but are any of the other pulleys called an 'idler pulley?' Reason I'm asking is my adjustable idler pulley was wiggling in it's bracket so I ordered an 'idler pulley' off rockauto that was not...

Need to check timing chain or belt on a 4.0?

I've got a '96 XJ w/ 4.0 and I've had it from miles 88k through 177k (now). Far as I know the timing belt/chain has never been looked at. Should I be concerned with changing it out or any kind of maintenance with it?

Thank God this happened just as i got home

I'm a little confused on the pricing of the water pumps I'm finding at Rockauto... 1996 JEEP CHEROKEE 4.0L L6 Water Pump | RockAuto Is the second one down, the GMB 1101080 for $16.06 the one I'm looking for? If it's OE seems like it would be more expensive compared to the others that aren't...

Thank God this happened just as i got home

'96 XJ 4.0 here ... So doing about 10 mph, right before turning into the driveway I hear some kind of rattle/clunking sound for about 2-3 seconds coming from the engine and just that second I lose power steering. I crank it on into the drive, pull around back and get out to see I've been...
