First, you need a '72 up 360 or whatever AMC you plan to put in. The crank flange in '71 was different from later ones (made for Borg Warner automatics. The Chrysler/Chev cases with AMC pattern came after that) pre-72 vs later crank flanges. You can't bolt a 318 to an AMC pattern trans. You...

What oil? What brand filter? (if orange, change it first) In fact, if it is, I would consider taking the filter adapter off and reverse blowing pressure through the sender fitting to see if there is a clog in the gallery. Aside from that, cam bearings or you didn't clean out the oil pump screen.

Newer boxes are O-ring which opens up another can of worms, but I like the Grand Cherokee box. J20 is for massive tires.

I'm converting a 94 Grand Cherokee from the 42 to an AW4 (93 had them before the switchover) MUCH better trans and the fuel economy is better too. One of Chrysler's stupider ideas was that weak car trans in a 4x4.

jumper cable from battery negative to the body and see if they all light up. If not, the body to motor ground broke/corroded.

It's the same as any AMC car except the Pacers. My Eagle wagon has the air cleaner from my '84 J10 on it. You might want to check fsjnetwork for full size stuff.

It should be mounted as close to the tank as possible too.

There are 2 fuses to check (one in the fuse box and one inline by the controller) and you need the later speed sensor off the trans (I only recently found that out)
