I now have a box of 3 dismantled XJ starter motors all with the same problem, worn out brushes.
It seems that the brush holder is a separate sub assembly riveted into the end cap complete with the 4 brushes and connection tail.
I can find these on Ebay.de for about €15-17 (Burstenhalter in German) although it might be a bit tricky to find the right one among the dozens offered.
Can someone recommend me a UK supplier where the guess work is taken out of the job? Then I can rebuild one of the dead ones and get a spare. A part number would be very helpful.
