YSE kit and gearing ratio's

I have a question, actually two, for all of you experienced jeepers out there.

1. How much trouble is it to install the Advance Adapter YSE kit? I am currentlly living the good ol' apartment life while I finish up grad school and I am not allowed to be "caught working on my vehicle" on the property. So if I do this I need to do it covert-like if possible.

2. I don't know if it is a common problem or not, however, I can't seem to keep my Jeep at speed in fifth gear on the highway. Most of the time, if I want to go with the flow of the traffic I have to run in fourth and that is just starting to eat up my gas mileage, not to mention the wear and tear. I recently calculated my gearing ratio and came up with a 2.55:1, yeah 2.55:1. I know the stock gears are 4.11:1, but why else would I run 65mph in fifth gear at <2000rpm, and have no available power for the slightest change in incline or headwind? Is there something I am missing?

if you have a 4.0 the stock gears are 3.07 not 4.11.... that is w/ a 2.5 engine.... and what is a YSE kit.... do you mean SYE??

from what I know... you can lay under the jeep and get the sye done pretty much trouble free IF you pay attention to what's going on, and you put everything back the way it came out... as far as gears... its basically a jeep thing... even with the 4.0, you're not going to have the best highway performance... they were designed to be driven offroad and will never compare to a sports car... you do have 3.07 gears, and you can change them out to 3.73 for much much better highway performance... if you go with 4.10, you will end up using more gas than you need to... you can find used 3.73's out of most automatic 4.0 wranglers, or you can find 4.10 in any 4 cylinder...

With the sye kit i would just take out the trasfer case and take it to a shop have the work done and just throw it back in. But you will need a new driveline.
When you have bigger the stock tires on a jeep you will lose 5th gear. I have 4.88's and 33"s and i have lots of 5th gear. I can do 65mph in 4th with only 3,000 rpms, With bigger tires i think that's dam good.

Hoped that helped.

I've got 31 inchers on my 4.0, stock gear ratio... i've still got 5th gear... but if you go any bigger than 31, you're going to start losing out on that high gear

What did you do when you "calculated your gearing ratio"?

Your stock gears should be 3.07, which are the highest gears that came on Wranglers. If you can find a set of used axles from a YJ 4cyl automatic, they all had 3.73 gears and would be a good upgrade, just bolt in the new axles. Easier than regearing the diffs, and will cost the same or less.

Thanks all for the info. You were right the stock gears are 3.07. I have a set of Dana 44's off of my old Scout that I want to swap under my jeep. Can anyone tell me how much it normallly cost and how much trouble it is to have the axels cut down to the right size?

the front axle has no caster which makes it wonder on the road, and your t-case is the wrong side drop for a scout
