YJ?...TJ

This might sound like a silly question, but I need some facts before I go any further with my search. I had an 88YJ and absolutely loved it!!!(Although it had many problems  ) I am looking into buying another Jeep and not sure if I should stick to the YJ or go to the TJ. If someone out there could describe some of the technical aspects, It sure would be helpful in determining my choice.

With appreciation~E

This should be a fun post lol. The biggest technical differeance between the YJ and the TJ is the suspension. The YJ has leaf springs and the TJ has four coils. The coils make for a smoother softer ride (still Jeep like, but very mellow, some people think that this is better, others worse), and give a huge amount of flex. . It's all in the opinion.

There are a ton of cosmetic changes, and some slight engine/transmission modifacations, depending on the year of the Jeep.

Lets not forget another difference, the headlights....YJ's are square, and TJ's are round :)

Keep in mind, that the price of mods for TJ's is alot higher than the cost of mods for YJ's.

My advice, if you are able, is to drive both, on and off road. See which one suites you, and go for it.

If you want the power of a TJ but still want a YJ, the YJs 91-95 have basically the same fuel injected engine as the TJs. YJs pre 91 had the lower hp carborated 4.3 engine, 91 - present use the fuel injected 4.0 which gives you 60 more hp.

As for which to buy, I own a 91 YJ, and I never owned nor been in a TJ... but it seemed like the goal when building the TJ was to make it more "comfortable". The interior change itself is drastic... from the dasboard to the wider rear seat. Personally I like the look of the YJ better than the TJ. It has a more aggressive wider hood, front grill and headlights, though I do like the TJ fender flares... they are cut higher for more clearance.

If money is an issue, I would get a 91-95 YJ and use the extra cash that would have went to buying the TJ for mods on the YJ.

Next??

Well, I'm a YJ owner, so this is biased, but I'd look for a 94 or 95 YJ. This was the last years of the YJ design and Jeep had nearly perfected it. The 4.0 like the previous guy said is superb. Be sure to hold out for the Fuel Injection. You don't want carbuerator hassle. But like PASmokeater said, the main change is the coil suspension. Preference. I'd drive a TJ if I found a good deal. The approach and departure angles are enough to convince me.

I would stick with the 94-5 YJ. The TJ has a lot of front end problems when lifted. And hasn't proven to be superior on a trail no matter how flexie they look in pictures. :D :D If you keeping her stock the TJ is the best. But you can hardly lose with anything 94 YJ and up to present TJ for powertrain.

Of course you could look at the history of the Jeep. You'll notice that they were built for REAL men in 41 and only got softer and foo-fooish as they progressed. So ask yourself what pecking order you want to be in.

"Bombs away!!!"

I have a CJ now but miss my YJ very much. The YJ can be modified for a fraction of the cost to do the same mods to a TJ. The TJ is plush as Jeeps go and theare awesome on the road and trail. Ride is far surpiorer to the YJ and with the disco and a lift it will flex like a tenn age gymnist. How ever I am and will most likely always be a Square! I love em some YJ's above all the rest. They made the TJ with a softer ride & a softer interior. The only drawback besides the lack of ruggedness in appearance would be the front end issue BakedAlaskan mentioned. I think if done right, that could be less of an issue, but YJ's are a much simpler Jeep, from the dash to the springs, and parts are a dime a dozen. YJ I don't think YJ you will have YJ any dissapointment YJ in either choice YJ, It's mostly a YJ prefence thing YJ. Good YJ Luck whichever YJ way you go YJ. lol

few questions.....

do you offroad?
do you drive long distances?
do you have a lot of money?
do you look to modify it a lot?
do you own another vehicle?
are you handy?
are you mechanically inclined?
do you like gatorade?

california laws?

From what I have read here and on other similar posts it sounds like you cant lose either way. We have had YJs and TJs in our family....Both we loved. I dont think you will be unhappy either way. Just be honest with yourself as to how much your going to street drive. Thats really where the biggest difference is noticed.

CJ7 Hard Top on Ebay

I'll put my TJ up against any similer YJ anytime you all think it's to "foo-fooish". I've had both, and the TJ with the flex is MUCH more superior on and off road....just never had someone get my goat up enough to say it before.

The one who brings up the manhood, is the one that questions it.

All I have to say.

Now Rob I think he means when it is stock. The only way for that argument to be fair is to put mine up against a bone stock TJ. YJ, YJ, YJ, YJ. to steal a line: down with the round! Sorry to whomever i stole that from
Mike

Any CJ or YJ that has the same type mods as my TJ I would gladly go toe to toe with, and gladly put them in their places. Actually, you have have a CJ or YJ that is modded more than my TJ and I will still have my way with you.

Sit back old timers (CJ/YJ) there is a new kid in town and we have improvised, addapted and overcame things that you only drempt about.

Leaves fall and are duely thrown out with the rubbish.

No "Old man" wants to give up the right of way, but they are soon over taken as they use their walkers.

Short Throw Shifter

Biggest restriction I see is in the budget. Take $10k and buy/build-up a YJ, then take $10k and buy/build-up a TJ ... You will find that you have a monster YJ and a basically stock TJ... maybe some 30" tires on it. I agree that there are more creature-comforts in the TJ, and it rides hella-better on and off-road compared with another stock YJ, but if you're on a college budget (ME!!!) then you'll see that unless you want to decrease your diet to just water (as opposed to Ramen and water) then the YJ would be a great choice.
... then again if I won the lotto I would own BOTH!

Thems is mighty strong words L33! :P

I'll reserve comment until mine comes in. (Oct 6 they tell me)

Actually, you have have a CJ or YJ that is modded more than my TJ and I will still have my way with you.

Within reason LOL

I dun want some rock crawler CJ with coil conversions, 35's, Dana 60s front and rear with Air lockers trying to take me up on the challenge.

OH you mean someone with 25-30K in there CJ can't come and play?? Wouldn't that be fair???? How about a $1500 dollar beater, are they welcome??

SOME HOW, I knew those comments would get someones goat.

SUCKERS!!!!!!

I "personally" am a CJ fan. (Duh!!) And I would personally destroy a TJ. Or be too cheap or parinoid I was going to hurt it to really use the thing. ...................that's just me.

So lighten up I was only playin ya.

Just to keep the pot stirred...................

(But rememeber I am only playing here and having fun, nothing personal)

That challenge means you follow me anywhere?? Through the trees?(better remove those flares oh never mind your too wide. I will get them off there for ya.) How about under the soft top scraping logs of the river bed? (The soft top bows will hold the weight of a jeep on two wheels, did you know that??) How about the ATV only trails, the limbs will actually move out of your way......sorta.

Hell I will challenge ya. What do I have to lose. I will be fully snorkled and ready for the deep end. Only 2 1/2 lift with (31's Possibly 33's) rattle can Olive drab paint and twenty four year old sheet metal, that just loves scraping against crap. Roll me over and I will laugh my ass off. Why I can beat ya is I don't fear what happens to my rig. What are you gonna do to me. Make me get stuck? roll me over? get me wet?? ooooooooooo!!!

OK I have to go to work, I can't banter all day...................See ya tomorrow!! Yipppeeeeeeeeeeee!!

Ask Tug and crew how I broke 10K. I have nothing but Tennessee Pin-stripes. I bashed my Fender into a clay wall and flooded my floorboards with good ole white TN mud. I am NOT afraid to use my TJ for what it was designed for. So that isn't a problem. ;)

P.S. 6 months old mean anything to you??

P.S.S. we will Hit Tug's in October. I will be sporting 2" lift and 32's. and we will go play. Take you to the Cabin trail and we'll see how much I care about "Trail damage" I bought it to play, I'll be damned if it stays on the asphault. How's that sound?

(I gotta throw it back atcha, ya know??) ;)
