does anyone know if an XJ over drive trans will bolt up to the 4.0 in a wrangler? will it fit? is it longer and how much? are the sensors the same? and will it work ? need an over drive trans in my TJ to save on gas from all the high way driving i do.... at 2.19 a galon here in NY its getting reducolous

why dont you already have OD in your TJ? i didnt think they were offered w/o a 5spd?

if your going to be runnin lockers and a stroker, your best bet is to buy late 80's or early 90's honda if you want good gas milage.

 i think you are right

i have seen articles on replacing a TJ transmission with the XJ 4spd auto... but i dont know the details. I do remember reading that you have to keep the Transmission computer.. other then that i dont know.... Im sure its been discussed on here before so give it awhile and youll get a more helpful response than mine. And you might try doing a search for it.

the stroker does not use much more gas than the 4.0 does.... the fuel consumtion is controlled electronically, and is going to be comparable to the consumtion of the 4.0.... the extra air detected by the O2 sensor will want to bump up the fuel used though.... BUT.... given the torque and increased power... you can travel a given speed in a higher cruise gear, and will help cave gas.... this is why there are 4.0's that get just as good, or even better fuel economy than some 2.5's...

yea my 2.5 is horrible on gas, and i do alot of highway driving so i want to keep the rpms down a little, i would buy a honda to save on gas but it just wont cut it, if im in traffic an di wan tto hop a median and go a different way the honda will probably fall apart and leave me stranded hahaha

It's a good thing..

A fellow jeeper in our club just replaced his TJ auto with the AW4 auto from an XJ, for the same reason you want to and the fact he toasted his old transmission in water.

The AW4 has it's own computer, so you have to make it work with the TJ's computer. Contact Yuri directly if you need more help, he's very helpful.

You will need to change your driveshaft lengths, and have your transfer case input shaft replaced or machined down to fit the AW4.
