XJ Front Axle on YJ

I am thinking about swaping in an XJ high pinion D30 in place of my stock YJ D30. My friend just totaled his rig and I can get it for next to nothing. I know that the XJ has a one piece passenger side axle shaft instead of the two piece vaccum disconnect on the stock YJ D30. Do I need to run a Posi Lok disconnect to be able to use this axle? Or some other mod? Or would it even be worth the trouble? Thanks as usual. Lane

an easier solution would be to take out just the axle shaft from the xj and put it in your yj...this gives you the strenght you want and elminates the need for the breakage prone shifter. you will have to change the axle seal as well.

Re: Showing My Loyalty

The YJ is also high-pinion, so there is no gain there. Are the axle ratios the same in both axles?

It's a lot of trouble to go through just to get rid of the axle disconnect, something that works well with a little maintenance or a cable disconnect.

Well I plan on regearing anyways, but it sounds like it may not be worth the trouble to swap it in... Perhaps just some high strength axles and a disconnect will do the trick.

i'm with bounty... the frequency of failure on a maintained disconnect is not high enough to worry about it... if you are having problems with it... replace the vacuum shifter and use a cable lock
