XJ Cutting Out

First time I´ve had my new (used) 88 XJ 4 Ltr. over 70, it started cutting out like it was fuel starved. I got off the interstate and on the curved offramp (a little to fast) it cut out again. The tank was just filled (hope I didin´t get a load of bad gas). My plan of attack is to change the filter, check the ignition (tune-üp) and then do a fuel pump test (as explained in Chiltons). Noticed my thermostat is sticking open, don´t know if it´s relavent or not, but seemed to be at about 150-170 F. when the problem hit. Also noticed it turns over, a few too many times before starting.
Anybody got some other things I can check while I´m at it?[addsig]

Your thermo sticking open will (should) not hinder performance, all those are great places to start. Another thing that you might want to check, when you get the tank down and the pump off, make sure there is not sludge or condensation in the bottom of the gas tank. I think all XJ's have plastic tanks, so it most likely will not be a rist issue, but is the jeep sat for a while a sludge can appear in the bottom of the tank near the pickup.

Thanx for the tip, used car means, I´m probably gonna have to change a few things, that are good, just to know where I´m at. 02 sensor seems a logical place to start. My sons first instinct was, the fuel pump also (he was along when it crapped out). It started right back up again when I backed off the gas. Just misfired and mostly stopped at around 75 MPH, felt like a RPM limiter. As long as I keep it below 75 it runs just fine, though the idle does seem to hunt a little bit (some ups and downs, minor).

If you think you have bad gas, get a can of 'SeaFoam' and put it in according to directions. Cleans the fuel system well. Use some in the intake, through a vacuum source per instructions. It'll clean the intake and valves, and the catalytic converter. Good stuff, got mine at Napa.[addsig]

Ran a couple of cans of injector cleaner and de-icer through the gas tank, noticable improvement.
Replaced the air cleaner with a new one. I´d cleaned the old one (better but not as good as the new one) and cleaned out the crankcase vetilation tubes. Major improvement.
Replaced the distributor cap and a couple of questionable cables. Noticible imrovement.
Relaced the fuel filter, boy was that thing full of crude. Did a fuel pressure and regulator test, OK.
Changed the plugs from Bosch back to Champion, good for about 15-20 horses and no stumble, stop or miss at highway speeds.

Still got the exhaust to do and maybe an 02 sensor replacement. It still hunts a little at idle. Seem to have a broken exhaust/intake manifold bolt, may have a slight vacumn leak.[addsig]

Glad to hear you got it squared away Chuck. There is some good advice there in what you accomplished... :-D [addsig]
