I want to install an intake on my XJ, but I don't know which intake is best. Rustys has a cheap one that looks like it will work. I am looking to squeeze a little more performance out of the engine right now. I am going to also do the throttle body and spacer along with the exhaust system. I am a firm believer that any increase in HP and torque is worth it. I like to push all of our cars to the maximum potential while still being streetable. So far I have seen:
1) a K&N CAI
2) Rustys CAI
3) AEM CAI
4) AIR RAID CAI

any suggestions

Are you really going with a COLD air intake, or just a cone intake?

Either way, I think making your own is the most economical way to go.

I was wrong sorry, not a cold air intake, just cone intake. Cold air requires a lower position which i don't want to do.

i made my own with filter for under fifty bucks with all pepboys parts

Yeah, that's the reason I ask... If you are not going true cold air... then you can save yourself a bit of money and gain a bunch of style points by making your own... PVC makes great tubing and is easy to work with... If you want to go with a cone intake, you can use the stock elbow and adapt some piping onto the end to extend it to where you want.... done... cheap... experience

I voted for Rusty's but that was only because there was no "other" choice in your poll.
I bought mine from a guy off Ebay who makes them. His is about 1/2 the cost and is a very nice exact fit which comes with a K&N cone filter.
I could not be happier.:p

So being new to Jeeps and really just off road vehicles, what is the difference between a cold air intake and a cone intake? Do they help with hp and mpg? I have seen that but there is never a definitive answer. Also, can you add one without messing with warrenty?

A cold air intake isolates the filter from the heat in the engine bay, cold air is more dense and makes for more power. Tough to make a cold-air intake for an offroad vehicle and not have it vulnerable to water ingestion.

The conical filter setup is simply an airtube with a conical K&N (or similar) filter attached to the end. THe conical filters flow a ton more air than stock airboxes and even drop-in K&N filters.

An intake setup will only void your warranty if it's evident that the modification caused the malfunction or failure. This is according to the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act (google it).

So sounds like a conical filter setup is a better bet. So how would adding a conical filter setup and also installing a Throttle Body Spacer help the overall hp and mpg? So if you get 5hp more installing the filter would you get another 5 to 10 by installing the throttle body spacer? Also for mpg? Hope there are not stupid questions :???: :???: :???:

it all helps the engine get more air for more power. But you also have to get it out better as the stock exhaust is kinked up very restrictive.

I bought a cheapo cone intake on ebay for like $25 from some store called chrome intakes. It makes a difference and sounds cool too.

What would be the best Air Intake system for my 2006 Wragler Unlimiter 4.0? I dont want to build one, just rather pay a little.

If they haven't changed the airtube from earlier 4.0L TJ's I'd just cut the end off the stock tube and attach a conical filter. I've got a 4.0L TJ airtube on my 2.5L YJ from an '04 Rubicon.

just remove the restrictor and use a K&N "drop-in" filter.

Better protection from taking in water that way.

I used to have a cone filter. I found that I ended up pulling water through it too much. It also got muddy very often. I actually ended up driving home with my sock over the air tube one day after I got sick of the mud.

After that, I cut the fender side wall out of my stock air box and drilled some water holes in the bottom of it. I didn't quite notice much of a power difference, but a filter alone never usually is very obvious. I konw it gets much better air than the stock setup and it drains water very well

oops, you have an xj (no restrictor).

I'd get whichever is cheapest but legal.

I actually found, but can't find any more an intake box that has a clear plastic cover over the filter so it looks like a stok box for protection but still had a cone on it. I think it may be better than an open cone set up. Do any of you guys think the pre-filter will work or will it kill the air flow?

AirRaid

I just installed an AirRaid Cone intake with tube on my 06 Wrangler and it made a significant difference in the HP. The jeep is much more responsive now and gets much better acceleration. Not sure on MPG but I am sure if I drive nicley it will do better. I am thinking of putting the throttle body lift on next.
