I am doing a favor for my sisters boyfriend and am fairly new to the jeep world. He said hes looking for a rear axle for 79 cj5. He says its an amc 20.? Does that sound right? Any tips for identifying. It would obviously be pickup only so let me know where u are and what you have! Thanks guys!

AMC20's came in CJ5's, but it would be referred to as a "narrow track" (approx. 47" between backing plates). Dana 44's in a narrow track will work as well with no modification. Check your local CraigsList..... They're very common. The AMC20 has a perfectly round diff cover and the D44 is more of an acorn shape.

I think I found him an axle. The guy said its amc 20 my question is was the amc 20 only offered in narrow track or should I tell him to measure his first and get a measurement from seller before driving two hours? The measurement is from axle go axle right? And how wide is a narrow and how wide is a wide track?

The wide track is approximately 52" from backing plate to backing plate. The narrow is approximately 47" plate to plate. Either will bolt up as long as they are from a CJ model (the Cherokees and FSJ truck axles were different). The narrow was discontinued in 82' and replaced by the wide in 83. The CJ5's only had narrows. The spring perch widths and diff positions were the same, only different overall lengths. I would go for the narrow track.

Im located in Illinois close to vincense Indiana I have a Dana 20 from under a cj-5 you sure that's all he need . I have few items I would part with for a cj-5

Also make sure it's not a quadratrac rear axle, which has an offset differential similar to a front axle.

Just make sure gear ratio and width are what you need.
