What type of transmission do I have???

I have a 1991 Grand Wagoneer w/360 and auto trans. I need a new torque converter due to mine being groved and leaky around the pump seal. I am trying to locate one and no transmission shops seem to know what transmission it is. I know it is a 727 or a variant of that, but the transmission shops all ask if it is an OD or a lockup or a 904, or 727. And they all insist that the starter ring gear is on the converter itself. It's not.

Is this a standard 727? Or a 904? Or an a815? I don't think it is an OD or a lock-up. One shop tried to tell me that they used many different transmissions in that year and there is no way of telling what it is without seeing it. I know that is a bunch of crap.

I figured a transmission shop would know what I need, they don't!

I am sure that in '91 they didn't use multiple automatics transmissions. Did they? I am sure there is only 1 type of converter used in a particular year.

I would really appreciate any advice from someone who actually knows about these transmissions. Please don't write back and ask me to check a bunch of things on the transmission or shaft or anything. I will not be home for several days.

Any leads? James.

Your Wagoneer originally came with the 3-spd Chrysler 727.

It's the same as a Mopar one but without the ring gear on it. AMC cars used them from '72 till '79 (when they stopped putting V8s in the cars and only in the Jeeps)
There may be a difference in the later year converters on GWs (they changed the flexplate and starter for sure '87 to '91)
