what is it?

I have a 1988 cherokee limited and it has a printed circuit board between the visors above the front windshield. I thought it was great place to put the garage remote, but it has wires to it. I'm still new to jeeps...anybody know what it is? Mine's broken and I want to replace it, but I can't even find out what it is in the jeep repair manual. Any solutions would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

It is the factory remote unlock receiver. There is a smoke grey cover that goes over it. Remotes are expensive, last I called dealer wanted 170 for the remote, might as well install a new alarm for that price. Remotes pop up on ebay every now and then and go for ~50$. I have found the cover for it to be hard to find (took me 5 separate trips to wrecking yard). A write up has been done on how to change the receiver out to one of the new models, can't recall specifically where (jeepsunlimited, I think). Also there is a website where you can order the remote from a secondary company at http://www.thejeep.com/piland.html Also this is the first year they offered it.

Hope that helps,

Kellen

KellenNold,
Thanks, I was worried it was something important to the operation of the vehicle. A remote unlock receiver...I can live without it. Thanks for the quick response.
