Ive heard the many folks who say new engine in cherokee no way. Well to them i say hey hey! Enough of the rhyming. IM tired of the 2.5 in my 86 cherokee, i need something bigger and i dont want the in reliable 2.8 Gm block. The 4.0 is too long. Something v shaped is the only solution. Im looking towards some form of a Gm v6 or yes v8. my dad is a schooled and experienced mechanic who has more than 40 years of experience, needless to say, he knows his crap. a small block chevy could work in his opinion. hed help me out, now i need some suggestions on which enigine to throw in there! should i just throw some old 350 or 327 in there, or an old engine out of an s-10 like the 4.2 they have. Hit me up with some suggestions.

The 4.0 is too long.

Are we talking about a mid-sized Cherokee? What model year? The cherokees had the 2.5L or the 4.0L in them from the factory. So the 4.0L should fit (but will require modifications to the engine mounts, etc.).

its a normal mid size two door xj, not the full size. ive heard the 4.0 wont go in this cause there would have to be a lot of firewall mods and what not.

Re: What is my Cherokee?

Tough to get the 4.0L in an older 2.5L XJ, different front clip and firewall.

I'd suggest sticking with a V6, like the GM 4.3L Vortec out of a late model Blazer or S10. You'll need the transmission and transfer case from the donor vehicle as well.

Basket case project WANTED

ive also been thinkin bout a blazer or s10 engine, i like ye olde 350s thou cause of all the options for power. im just wondering what im gonna have to do for a computer on this thing and to get it to pass a smog certifaction board, unless i pay good old Muhammed at the local smog test station for a false report .

The 4.3L vortec has almost as many mod options and aftermarket support as the good 'ole 350, and you can get a good amount of power out of the lighter 4.3L package.

Stick with a 4.3L the same year as your XJ or newer, and keep all emissions intact, and you should be okay on emissions.

but what about computer systems and what not?

For any fuel injected engine you put in there you'll need the matching ECU, Sensors, and wiring harnesses help too.

yeah i would have to agree with your dad,a small block chevy would be good, parts are cheap horse is almost equal to its torqe and in a cherokee you would more than likey be able to get away with it without having to do alot of customization.you would need to run a gm trans and poss.a transfer case i am not sure what the gears are and if they are compatible. Are you sure the 4.0 l wont fit.most of them have 4.0L's in them anyways its miller time so later
