welding spider gears

RE: Spare on the roof made for some excessive roll

Hi, my friend has a Toyota 4x4 and he is thinking about welding the spider gears together. He has 38's. I know this topic has come up before, but I was thinking about doing the same in my 14 bolt now. Will I be safe doing this with 300 hp and 38.5" boggers? Will he?

You'll both be fine, as long as they're properly welded. Once you weld 'em up you won't want anything else.

It's the backyard equivalent to a spool. That's not to knock it, but while they serve the same purpose, a spool(or even a mini-spool) is much stronger. That 14 bolt will be fine, it's gonna laugh at 38s no matter what you do to it. The Toyota axle might be a different story. They are really tough considering their size, but I've seen problems with locked yota axles and tires over 36". More than likely he'll be fine though, especially if he's still running the four popper.

yeah, it is still a 4 popper hahaha. So, you think I will be fine?

Yes the Lincoln Locker is the poor-mans spool, and being poor is why I run two of them ;)

Spools are much better than lockers IMO, 100% reliabilty since there's no locking/unlocking to worry about. They're 100% predictable in how they drive onroad and off, no locking or unlocking when on/off the throttle. 100% lock all the time, no other way.

I don't know if anyone even makes a spool for a 14bolt. I'm sure there are some out there, I just don't remember seeing one. Considering the beef of a 14bolt's guts, I wouldn't have any fear of welding one. Find somebody with a good welder and some experience and have them lay you down a couple of beads.
