im looking into buyinh the weber carb for my 87 yj with a 258 in it. has anyone had any problems or any tips to share???:???:

I love mine. They're expensive, and some say they are hard to tune (I've had mine since 98 and haven't had to tune it yet (although it has gotten hard to start when it sits for more than 24 hours or so which I think means I'm due for some tuning). It has a lot more power than the motorcraft I have on my other Jeep, though the motorcraft was a lot cheaper and is a breeze to work on. Both are miles ahead of the BBD. The original 32/36's are hard to find new now, but Collins bros (usually VERY overpriced) has these copies

that several people over on Jeepforum seem to be happy with. You could also probably pick up a used 32/36 somewhere. If you get it on and get it tuned right (might require a lot of tuning, might be bolt on and go as mine was) it will absolutely ROAR when you hit the gas and my mpg went from about 12 with my bbd to about 15-16 (less if I drive like an idiot).

If you can't swing a weber the MC2100 is a great upgrade too, and they're cheaper.......

I found a used one and rebuilt it. My experience was a little different. My mileage went from 15 - 16 down to 12 - 14. It is also somewhat hard to start after it sits for a day or so. I've found that if I pump once to set the choke, crank it for about 15 seconds, pump it a couple of times, then it starts. It is also running rich, but I don't know if that is the carb. As far as running, it has better power than the Carter did.

I saw something over on JU that said if you screw in the idle screw past a certain point that it allows fuel to drain out of the bowl. My cold starting issue appeared after I had the engine rebuilt and the guy who installed it said he couldn't get it tuned like he wanted it. It runs fine but has the cold start issue. I'm going to rebuild it in the near future and see if I can't get it tuned right. Lots of info on tuning over on Jeepsunlimited, although the guys over there are sometimes a little over my head......

That makes sense. Mine seems to start fine after I crank it a while to get the fuel built up. I'll check their stuff out on JU. If you do find that was your problem, post it and what you did to fix it.

Got the weber on my hunting Jeep that I keep about 250 miles from here at my parents' house. I'm going down there in a few weeks. I'll try and tear into it when I'm there if the weather is nice. Mine always started great till I had the engine rebuilt. The guy who did it said "I had to idle it all the way up to get it to idle when cold" so I have a feeling he just didn't know how to tune a weber carb. It probably needs a kit anyway since it's 8 years old now....
