This '87 YJ I'm looking at buying has a stock 258 6 cyl. with the original Carter carb on it. He bought a Weber carb for it and never installed it. He offered it to me for $200 and said he paid $350 for it (I don't know what model, but he said it's the right one for that motor). Is is new and in the box.

Should I buy it or wait to get a Motorcraft like I've seen Tug reccomend?

Anybody know what the motorcraft carbs cost?

I don't have a clue which one is better or what they cost, so any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated.

A new 32/36 Weber carburetor usually go for a little over $ 300.00.
That is a really good carburetor but be aware that you will not pass emition inspection with it.

twisted if you are moving to pa then leave that carb alone. they will not pass that in your visual emission inspection. just go with the motorcraft, i had them both. i bought the motorcraft and got rid of the weber. the weber just sucked. and yeah i adjusted it, i spent 6 months adjusting it.

Why will this Weber fail emmissions? Is it lacking some emmisions control feature or something???

What did you pay for the Motorcraft?

that is the problem, the only emission device that you will retain is the pcv. i paid like 115.00 for my motorcraft. for 115.00 and better performance than the weber you cant go wrong. either way you decide to go i have all the info on the swaps (both).

The Webber is considered a performance Carb. and that is not allowed for emmisions. The motorcraft is just a stock carb. They used it on the amc 304's and 360's in jeeps and wagoneers. I live in PA and where I got mine inspected he didn't even give it a second look. It depends on where you get one from. You can get one from your local parts store for a little over 100. or a junk yard for about 20 and rebuilt it yourself for another $20.

i got mine from a 1975 waggy with a two bbl v8, BUT i screwed up when i got mine because it did not have an electric choke. i believe tug got his from a ford pinto, or you can get one from a older ford van or truck. the correct venturi size will be 1.18 which you can check at the junkyard right on the side of the carb. now if you go to the auto parts store they will not have that info on their computer.

i have been gathering info on the motorcraft swap, and i have not been able to locate one online  i have been looking up the wrong info, can someone help me out? i know the carb is a mc2150 and i need a mr carb1937 adapter plate, but what else is involved.

i had my jeep emission tested, back in feb with the crappy carter bbd, and i ended up having to spend about $300 for it to pass/run right on the machinerey. no wshe runs like dog do!!! i sould have done the swap b4, but i wanted to get my sticker.
