hey guys iam lookin into gettin a jeep 97+ what are some of the common problems with jeeps. i know that 97 is when they changed from the closed cooling system. any other problems?

RE: Happy T-Day

yeah, watch out for the fever too, they've been known to be very addicting.

Hee hee... VERY addicting... I have noticed no real problems with mine, nitpicky things here and there that could very well be my fault... Yes, the U-joint DID crack, but in all fairness, I was hanging off a stump by the frint driveshaft. And the window switches were being problematic, but I also leave it open in the rain much more than I should... Go for it, you won't be disappointed...

RE: Regarding the Site...

There is generally a bad connection of the BUS connection where the guage cluster connects to the wiring harness. This poor connection causes all guages to fail and the airbag light to activate. DC has issued a TSB on the problem, but many jeepers fix it themselves.

The switch for the driving lights often burns out, the replacement switch from DC is designed to remedy this problem.

The 4.0L exhaust manifold will likely be cracked and will need replaced or welded.

Just a few that come to mind.

Hmm... I didn't even know that, but then again, I just woke up too...

Just what you need for your bicycle.

the only thing holding me back on the jeep is the lack of towing power, and the interor. so that makes me seriously consider the explorer)96+). off roading isnt the main point here, its a side one. i need somethign thats easy to drive, and would handel good.

I can tell you from experience (the wife has a 99 Explorer) they ride like a lumber truck. Yes it has more towing power and it does have a nicer more comfortable interior with more buttons and gadgets but once you start rolling down the street it stinks. I think my TJ rides better and the wife thinks it's a toss up.

Just my opinion.

Our '98 XJ 4.0L towed very well, we often pulled an 18' Mariah skiboat and I dollied my YJ with it several times. I'm not real impressed with the Ford 4.0L V6, regardless of what it's rated to tow.

thats good to know, with in the next few years i hope to get yahamma jet boat(21 foot twin 140hp's) so iam guessing the xj could tow that pretty easey as its incredably flat here(i live on the coast) if i did get the explorer theres no way ide get the v6. the last ford that i had with a v6 cost me an arm and a leg

RE: jeep jamboree charlotsville va mar18-20

I love the way mine drives... It's not exactly a smooth ride, but then again, it's not a luxury sedan either. But I get in the drivers seat, and it's like an extension of my body, I know where all the corners and ends are... I have been able to park in places that the friends were sure that I would hit someone, and squeeze into little spaces without thinking twice... And it's not a rough ride either... Stable, that's a good descriptive...

Wheel Fit ?

XJs are great, and they tow surprisingly well, but keep in mind that all Jeeps may be built the same, but they aren't all driven the same. ANY used XJ should have thorough testing of it's structural integrity. They will develope problems with abuse if the proper steps aren't taken to avoid those problems. After we got the flexy RE lift and 33" TSLs on my buddies 94, it took about 2 months of offroading until his passenger door fell off one day when his girlfriend was getting in for a date(haha). The welds broke from all the flexing of the "chassis"/body structure those things have. There was a local guy here that had a 401 in his 88? XJ. The torque almost ripped the poor little thing apart, it got tweaked so bad it doglegged down the road as bad as a longbed Ford pickup truck.
