Transmission swap: 5mt to Auto possible?

Anyone see a Lime green wrangler yet?

Ok, So I did a search and did not find anything specifically answering this.

I might be getting a new Wrangler, since mine was never found :( One I am looking at is a 5 speed, 1992, but needs a new transmission. I actually perfer an automatic in a jeep for offroading (left foot braking).

Is it possible to swap the 5 speed out for an automatic with relative ease?
Drop teh new transmission in, put a floor mounted shifter, and go?> Obviously, not too easy....but are there headaches I might come upon, and that may make it hard or impossible, or infeasible cost wise?

thanks

You'll need the correct auto transmission to match the engine in the '92, and probably need to change the transfer case input to match the auto transmission output. That's about it.

What engine is in this '92 YJ? You may consider a 4spd auto from a late model XJ, if you're going to do it you may as well have an overdrive.

find a 700r4 and a t-case out of a chevy pickup and through her in there. Not sure if there is a floor shifter made to be compatable with jeep autos, we were trying to find one for my friends 90yj but could not.

Jeepr89, that would require an expensive adapter to get the 700r4 to bolt up to the 4.0L engine.

You need an AW4 from a late model XJ. A friend of mine picked one up from a junkyard, low mileage from a '99, for $200. Just be sure to get the transmission computer with it.

Main complaint I hear from Wrangler auto owners is the lack of an overdrive. My buddies 3spd auto went out, so he swapped in the AW4.

You'll need a different input gear for the transfer case, or have the one in there machined down to fit the AW4 output.

The AW4 is longer than your AX15 5spd, so both driveshafts will need the length changed accordingly.
