I have a 91 YJ with the 4 banger, Everytime I am in a tight spot where traction is limited or even when not, when i put it in reverse, My shifters come over and hit my leg, I have put new mounts by Energy Suspension all urithane, checked all of my bell housing bolts, None of my mounts are busted and i am confused as hell on what the problem is if anyone has had this prob, or knows how to fix it let me know.

thanks

Motor mounts where a good place to start, I periodicaly check mine with peice of 2X4,prying and looking close. To avoid tearing up the motor mounts I have strapped the motor down with a couple of old pieces of tow strap (with a little slack). A soldering iron will burn a hole through the strap, for a nut, bolt and large washers. It is tuff sometimes to find clearance and a good place to anchor.

With the Jeep stopped and wheels blocked, put it in neutral and grab the drive shaft and turn left and right. Over the years a little play here and a little play there, adds up to guit a bit of play. And when shifting from low to reverse the drivetrain, unwinds and allows the engine to rev some before the slack is taken up. This can also happen when in the loose stuff and periodicaly getting traction and slipping. Whatever it is , it is potentionally damaging to the drivetrain.

Most times, the most play is, in the differential between the pinion and the ring gear, but can also be and/or include other rear end parts and bearings.

Take it easy on the hammer when shifting between first and reverse and things will last alot longer.[addsig]

Did everything you said except the tow strap thing all my mounts are good, and when I blocked the tire with wood in 2 hi i had slight movement i would say maybe 3/4 of an inch and the same in 4 Lo, on the rear drive shaft however on the front in 4 Lo i had maybe half of the movement, I am gonna have my buddie make me some bracets weld them to the side of my frame and see if i can make me some kind of braket that will limit the movement with out knocking a hole through the side of my transmission I will let you know if this helps any

thanx for your help

My driveshaft has about 1/2 inch of movement, and I consider my drive train to be loose (ring and pinion, spidergears, axle splins, carrieir bearings, a little here, a little there all adds up).

I popped the clutch in mine just to see how much it would jump. It was none, to none noticeable, and my wotor mounts and transfer mounts are original (1990).

The straps I was talking about were both side of the motor (as high as possible) down to the frame or motor mount bolts. Really helped save motor mounts in desert racing.

Solid engine or transfer mounts didin´t work well, something always bent or broke.

Seems you have some serous movement somewhere, that doesn´t sound normal.

Maybe seriously blocking the tires and locking the parking brake, then loading up the drive train some and letting loose, while looking underneath (carefully) will help nail down where all the slap is coming from.

I noticed on my transfer along with the large rear mount there is also a smaller mount (on the left side transmission bottom), that looks to help control torque flex of the main mounts. [addsig]
