I know this was a dumb move...but please respond if you have a smarter answer !
I have a 98 Cherokee, about 30K miles. I was driving about 30 mph, and tried to put it in Neutral to coast down a hill. I inadvertently moved the selector to Reverse for a moment (ie. moved the selector to far). The tires locked momentarily, and the engine stopped. I coasted the rest of the way down the hill deadstick (no engine/neutral), then restarted the jeep. Everything seems to be okay.
I know you should never put a moving car in reverse, but what damage might have occurred. Everything seems okay, but I wonder if there is any hidden damage that I need to have looked at. I guess I don't understand how an automatic transmission works -- are there any teeth in the gears that may be bent and are slowly eating the transmission up, or did I just get lucky?
If there is damage, would I be making it worse by just driving until it shows up ? Let me know if you have any advice (Other than the obvious -- don't put a moving car in reverse you dumba!!! Thanks.
