Trans swap in 97 zj

Going to be picking up a 97 zj that has the awd and is auto. Just wondering if I could take the manual trans and np231 out of my 94 xj and swap it in. The zj I'm getting for free. It's a impound where I work and the boss wants it gone. Just wondering if this is possible or not.

I looked into an auto to manual switch for a 97 xj a few months back. I know for an xj its possible but gets very expensive cause the newer transmissions are computer controlled and its a whole new harness and computer.. the older won't fit the newer unfortunately. It will throw engine codes and probably run quite poorly

And with zj s being just a little diferent I would expect to run into a few little problems with all the parts from the xj fitting the zj.

Which motor is in the '97 ZJ?

Tons of changes between '94 and '97, not the least of which was the switch from OBD I to OBD II.
