TRANNY SYNCHRO

I JUST BOUGHT A 93 YJ WITH A 4.0 AND THE AX-15 5 SPEED TRANS. SHIFTING INTO 3 GEAR SEEMS TO BE A CHALLENGE. SLOW SPEED CHANGES DON'T GIVE MUCH GRINDING BUT UNDER MEDIUM ACCELERATION SHIFTING INTO 3RD GRINDS A LOT. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO REMEDY THIS? WILL NEW OIL HELP OR DO I NEED A NEW SYNCHRO? COULD THE SHIFTER BE OUT OF WACK? THANKS ANTHONY PS. DOWN SHIFTING TO 3RD IS EVEN WORSE.[addsig]

I would check your transmission fluid just incase, but what might be the cause of the problem is if your clutch fluid is low.[addsig]

Please don't type in ALL CAPS... it's considered "yelling" and is quite rude... not to mention hard on the eyes.

With the AX-15 there is a chance that someone followed the misprint in the owners manuel and put a GL-3 in there that is eating away at the brass syncros. Try changing to a sythetic GL-3 or a GL-5

That may solve the problem but it might only delay the invitable... Good time to upgrade to an NV3550 or 4500 though...

I have a similar prob with my 95 YJ. 2nd gear is the worst and third grinds too...fourth grinds only every once in a while. Third has alwasy been pretty bad though...sometimes I have to push as hard as I can to get it in third (but it doesnt grind then...just is really hard to get into gear). Second grinds even when I am stopped and the motor is running (that sure is wierd to me....). Im used to the old transmissions where you had to put it in second before you could put it in first cuz first was not syncronized back then. First and fith are fine and never grind.[addsig]

I had the same problem with my 93 YJ when going into 2'nd gear. I called around to a place called driveline specialities. They hooked me up with some fluid made for GM vehicles. It's called GM synchro meshing fluid...I can't remember the number on the bottle. It worked great and I've had very few problems since.[addsig]

Wrong. The owner's manual incorrectly recommended GL-5, which is corrosive to the brass synchronizers. GL3 is the correct rating.

Try using the GM or Penzoil Synchromesh, or Redline MT90, for a smooth shift. These synthetics should improve shifting and increase the life of the transmission.[addsig]
