TF999 automatic Trans in an 81CJ7 - Will not go back in Park

Hello All, I am having an issue with my transmission. I have a 81CJ7 with a 258 and a TF999 automatic transmission. About a year ago, I was having a normal day an it happened. I put my jeep in park and she started rolling out of the parking space I was in. I had a hell of a time getting it back out of park to put it in neutral to get it started again. Its been in neutral ever since (unless you count reverse and drive) but other than that I havent put it in park since. I bought a set of chocks and thats how I make sure she stays where I leave it. NOW, I have some time to attempt to make this repair however, I have no clue what is wrong. Let me first tell you that I am NOT a mechanic. I am competent, but not a mechanic. I have searched high and low for detailed instructions for a full rebuild with no sucess. What baffles me though (before I do a total rebuild) is it drives and shifts fine in all the other gears. My question is, what could be making it difficult to get back into park and should I just attempt a full rebuild since I am almost sure the transmission will have to be dropped? And "YES" it has fluid. I did check the linkage on the outside of the transmission that hooks up to the column, and it was in good shape and working properly. Somebody had mentioned to me the term "dogleg". I don't know if they were talking about the transmission or if they were making fun of me. Any help would be appreciated. My New Years Resolution for 2012 is to get "RUSTY" back in shape. She is 30 years old and deserves to be takin care of. Thanks Bryan

Is the linkage messed up? Maybe your motor mounts and/or transmission mounts are messed up and the drivetrain shifted so your linkage got messed up

In the engine compartment near the steering shaft there should be the linkage bar with a bolt on it! loosen that bolt! second photo

go under the jeep and put the trans in park on the side! first photo!

Now make sure the prndl (park, neutral ect.) selector is at park!

Now tighten down the bolt at the linkage!

I hope I am right its been a while since i seen one!

Good Luck!

Keep us updated!

I will try that. Thank you. Let me clarify though, it will go back in park but then is hell getting it back out. I'll keep you posted as to what I find.

Sometimes when the linkage is out of adjustment it pulls on the parking pin and makes it hard to get out of park because of the tension it puts on the pin
