temperture sending unit

ok I guess it just takes me looking at something for awhile to get it right. I wrote a week or so ago asking about replacing the temerture sending unit gauge with one mounted under the dash. My problem was that the unit on the intake was much smaller than the one that came in the unit I bought at Autozone. I have a 82 cj7 258. There is a water plug on the intake right below the carb. that can be used for the sending unit. Maybe everyone knows this already but it is nice having a temperture gauge that works. Now maybe I can figure out something about the fuel gauge..........[addsig]

A temp sending unit is just a temperature activated resister. If it don't fit where you want to put it, get another size. Test it before you go through all the work to put it in. To test any temp sending unit just hook it up to the gauge and use a propane torch to heat a small metal cup of water. If it works it will go up with heat. But don't stick your finger in the water. This would hurt most folks. You can use this method to test the operation of a thermostat too. Use a tc or thermometer if you want to know how warm the water is. Have Fun Lee [addsig]

Thanks for the info. I put on a new fuel tank and sending unit but the fuel gauge still does not work. It worked poorly before the new unit and only for a moment after the new unit went on. Maybe the old saying if it ain't broke bad don't fix it would apply. Anybody got any suggestions????[addsig]

The fuel level indicator is another resister. Rust is the normal problem of non operation. In other words a poor connection. Take the sender out of the tank and move it to see the gauge go up and down. If the wires are hooked up it will act just like it was still in the tank with differant levels. ;-) Lee[addsig]
