Just purchased a 88XJ unit has front dana 30 axle but no tcase. Previous owner says it was removed (blew up) shop replaced with longer rear dshaft & removed tcase & front shaft. Says it all could be put back 2wd 4wd trans are same except adaptor & output shaft (says trans was never removed to change to 2wd) and 2wd tailshaft housing. Has anyone ever hseen this before? Is a 2wd trans same as 4wd just a tailshaft & output shaft change? any help/info appreciated.:???::???:

They're pulling your leg, the AW4 is completely different between 2wd and 4wd.

Somebody simply bolted in a d30 from a 4wd jeep.

Just to be sure, check for vacuum lines from the transfer case area to the pass. side of the front axle. Also lift the carpet on the driver's side of the transmission hump and check for the cutout for the transfer case lever.

May be able to determine by the VIN if it was originally 2wd or 4wd.

It's common as one of the steps when converting to 4wd.

Another item to check is the front and rear axle gear ratios, make sure they are the same. The diff covers may have a tag under the bolts, post the numbers. If no tag, pull the covers and post the numbers on the edge of the ring gear.
