RE: Ball Joint Mechanics 101 or What I learned on a rocky sl

Hi

i just swapped in a couple of D44s fom a FSJ this summer, and the steering is funky.

it turns farther in one direction than in the other???

I DID have the steering column out, and that is my first thought - havent checked it yet... I also tossed on a drop pitman sunday. But that doesnt seem to be the culprit since the pitman and shaft is keyed at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions... eliminating the oops factor.

anything?

thanks agin

RE: hellloooo

Are the steering stops adjusted to the same position?

RE: Acetone???

You need to correct the length of the draglink so the pitman arm is centered in it's range of travel when the tires are staight.

What steering linkage setup did you go with?

Good, I've still got the stock FSJ steering attached to my D44, had considered using it when the axle goes in.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Suggestions...

yep, it fits fine. Its essentially the same thing, just about 1/4" thicker in diameter, which is good.

The only fabbing I had to do in that area is enlarge the pitman arm hole a bit since the drag link is more beefy that the YJ link.

oh yea, make sure you get the axle-side steering damper mount plate. It sits sandwiched between the axle and the right spring and the other end as you probably know is clamped to the tie rod.
i forgot about that and am now trying to figure a way.. prob just weld a grade 5 bolt to the axle.
