Simple Oil Change -Yeah Right

I drained the oil out in my 98 TJ. Went to fill it up but couldnt get the damn filler cap off. It just spun with that clicking sound like a gas cap. Then it broke off in my hand. Now I cant get the oil back in since that ratchitty thing broke off in the filler neck on the rocker cover. How do i fix this?

Buy a YJ......

Sorry, couldn't resist. So, did the other piece fall into the rocker cover, or is it still screwed into the hole? If it's still in the hole, drill two holes in it opposite of each other, thread a screw in each hole, and use a screwdriver blade to unscrew what's left of the cap.

Not to question, but wouldn't the plastic shavings from the drill end up in the engine? I'd suggest, if the piece still in there has jagged edges for the ratcheting mechanism to work, open a pair of needlenose pliers in there, so you can get a grip on the outside of the circle, and twist it out.

The cap will do this when the engine it hot, my guess is that you shut it off and then did the oil change. Not always the case, they just wear out, but I had the same problem where I could not get it to loosen, kept click click clicking, once the engine cooled down, came out fine.

If you NEED to get oil in the engine to drive it, you can pull the front breather elbow on the top of the engine, and use that hole. Be careful with the little plastic elbow, they can get brittle.

I tried pull the front breather elbow and broke it. Just not my day. Should that elbow come out or is it permanent? Its not a pcv but a ccv.

wow, you are having a bad day, i once was doing a tuneup on my wj and broke off my dip stick flush with tube, couldn't get the tub to come out so i finally had to just drop the oilpan and push it back up and out, sucked but hey STuff happens. Wish you luck on the cap, I would try the Needle nose thing or get a screw driver and Flathead and stick it down and across the cap so the blade is on the inside and the shaft resting on the oppisite side and try twisting the whole screw driver counter clockwise to get it to come off. Think that will work, Well at least It does in my head cause i can visualize it. It's kinda hard to explain. Hope you understand what i'm explaining and it works out for you. Oh and as far as the plastic elbow, I belive it comes out but don't quote me on that ;)

Thanks 4 the link Jonny YJ....I always like reading up on problem solving, so if it ever happens to me, I will know.

No problem. That website is awesome. So much useful information. Even though I have a YJ and the write ups relate to a TJ, there is still a ton of good stuff.

Eeew... Yes, the elbow should come off, but as I said, and it looks like as you found, they get brittle with age :( I went to pull mine to clean them, as you are apparantly supposed to when you begin having blowby problems, snap snap... And they were clean to boot!
