Short Throw Shifter

Im new here, and close to buying a 98 Sahara Sport. Im coming from a car with a 5 speed. When I drive the jeep there is one thing I dont like, the length of the throw when I shift and the play in each gear.

Is there a short throw shifter available to make the shifts shorter and more notchy?

stripped hub bolts

I went from a 5spd car to a brand new TJ and there is no comparison. a car transmission and a jeep transmission are just so different. There is going to be a little play in the jeep gears no matter what you do. A short throw shifter isnt going to do much. Take a look at ergonomics too before you rip out the old shifter. You sit alot higher in a jeep than a car and you dont want to bend over just to shift gears. That will get old real fast. I have never hear of someone doing what you want to do

Well a short throw shifter doesnt necessarily make the actual shifter shorter, just the shift THROW.

I have a WRX and I have a short throw shifter in it and its the same height as the stock shifter, just the throws are shorter and make for quicker gear changes.

It just felt like I was stirring soup when I shifted instead of getting it into gear in the Jeep. Im sure to have less play in a Jeep the shifter bushings would have to be changed as well.

I would really like to do this to my jeep, if anyone has done this, please reply.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you

i am personally very comfortable with my shift pattern... but of course... its because i am used to it... if i got a sts kit, i'm sure i would get used to that as well... but i have never had a problem with my throw being too long

My ol t18 transmission shifts like I am mad at everyone in the jeep. First up aganist the dash second in my ribs third lean way over and forward to push it all but out the passenger side door and the in the lap of the passenger seat is fourth. Too Much Fun. Tug

Re: saw something great today

I can relate tug, the old green CJ-5 slams the T handle shifter into my leg like a hammer if I stomp on it when it's in 2nd gear :?

jpaj- make sure your sahara doesnt have a body lift, most short throw shifters won't work with a body lift

Thats good to know about the body lift. The one Im looking at is totally stock except for the stereo and speakers. So it shouldnt be a problem with a full suspension lift kit then (thinking for the future)?

Thanks for all the helpful replies,
Joe

I've got the B&M on my CJ7 and it is night and day to the stock shifter. Looks the same except it's stainless (even took the orininal knob) but it shifts MUCH better. Very easy intstall too. Hurst also makes one.

Can I have my soft tpp and hard top on at the same time?

i don't understand why you would want a sts?? you aren't giung to be racing anyone are you? i think the best part of the jeep is you actually have to drive it, not just sit there

I can see where it would help with a body lift, it would help keep the shifter from hitting the tub or being to close to the center console or dash.

You're right, it's not a race car, but may be worth the $$ to some.

They only advertise the STS for the AX15, I'd be interested to find out if it will bolt up to the AX5. I've read that the shifters and shift towers are the same between the two, but who knows.

Suspension lifts shouldn't effect the short throws for the most part

I don't see how a body lift would either, the shifter should be close to the same height as stock, yet having a shorter throw. Actually works better for use with a body lift than a stock shifter.

i can totally see how it would aid in a body lifted jeep... and TUG... i know just what you are saying... my dads old GMC, we put a transmission in it a few years back, never did find out what it was... but to shift that thing, you have to hand the shifter to the passenger to get the thing into reverse
