RE: Change dana or change differential ratio?
I have an 04 Wrangler X with a 4.0L I6. We've never got less than 14mpg, even in stop and go traffic commutes. We're usually around 17mpg though. Mine's a 5 speed with a 3.07 axle ratio and 30" tires. If you've had this problem from day one, then I'd definitely follow up with another dealer or even go straight to Chrysler Customer Service with a complaint....especially if you are under warranty. If the problem is somewhat recent, then I'd recommend buying a high quality fuel injector cleaner ($10) or having the fuel system professionally cleaned ($35) just to make sure you have not picked up a bad batch of gas or something. Either way, find a reputable dealer and get it handled under the warranty if you're still covered. 9mpg is way out of line...in my opinion. THAT SAID....one small extra piece of info....for some reason my 4.0L runs rough on 87 octane, even though that's the recommended. We always put in the 89 octane now. I know gas is expensive, but if you're going with the low grade right now...run it down to the "ding" (that "ding" low fuel warning sound scares the CR@P out of my wife ever time it goes off) and then fill up with 89 or higher...just as a test.
