Reverse Lights

I"ve got a 1991 XJ w/ 4wd (4.0), and I'm trying to diagnose why the backup lights don't come on, I'm trying to locate the switch that activates the lights, any ideas?

I look at the haynes book but its too generic

Auto or 5spd? Switch for the 5spd is screwed into the side of the transmission with 2 wires coming out. Switch is probably bad.

If it's an auto it's likely the neutral safety switch mounted to the transmission. You can take it apart and clean it per another thread in this forum.

I has to deal w/ you Neutral Safety Switch, here is a great link for cleaning it and getting it to work. I just did mine last night and it works GREAT...!!
