Replace windshield frame

Ok, so now I bought a good used windshield frame with glass to replace the rusty frame on my 92 YJ. Has anybody ever changed out the windshield frame and any idea how long it will take someone with an average mechanical ability (like me) ? I heard horror stories about those torx screws and I think if I run into any problems that may be it.. Any advice would be appreciated.[addsig]

Get yourself a good ez out and be ready to have problems with the trox. If I were you I would plan to replace the trox with hex head screws. If I take one out I always try to replace them as I go with hex or what ever works best for the applacation at hand. Tug[addsig]

I replaced mine a little over a year ago. It's simple. The torx screws have very soft heads on them and strip very easily. You might want to pick up a few extras if you think you'll have problems with them. Just undo the screws on the roll bar to the windsheild frame, the bottom inside screws to the windsheild frame above the speakers and the hinge screws. While it's all apart you might want to also replace the windshield frame seal with a new one (a lot of them will leak once the frame has been folded down). Now you just have to take the wiper motor out which is probably the hardest thing about this job (which still isn't even that difficult) and install it into the new frame. You might also want to spray the inside of the new frame with some kind of rust preventer. I can't remember the name of the stuff I used but the can came with the little straw which you can stick through the screw holes and coat the whole inside of the frame. Now just reinstall the frame. When you put the new screws in on the outside hinge, you might want to put a little silicone in the holes to keep any water from getting in through them. If you have a Haynes auto manual it will explain everything you need to know about doing this job.

it is a pretty easy task. to replace the yj windsheild frame. I'd suggest soaking the torx bolts with like wd-40 or move-it or something for a couple of days before attempting it though.[addsig]

Another misconception about those pesky torx bolts is, A lot of people pick the torx wrench that looks like it fits (for example) T45 and it would remove the bolt. But if it is a stubborn bolt, it might strip. Try using a T47 or any larger wrench till you can not fit anything else in there! Torx head are supposed to be stronger when the proper wrench is used. More surface area for gripping between the wrench and bolt.[addsig]

As Tug mentioned, as you remove a crappy TORX, replace it with SAE! (or hex) I started with the TORX screws in my mod 20 diff housing! Made them go bye bye right quick in a hury! Replaced them with SS bolts (1/4 x 3/4x20 to be precise)

The only Torx left on my jeep now are those in my windshield frame. Ther soon to go as well, when I get around to installing my new frame.
