Rebuilt Transmissions

On my way home tonight my transmission screwed me. I'm not sure what is wrong yet. BTW its a '94 4.0 auto. I checked all fluids and they're full. It makes a funky noise when I press the accelerator even in neutral. It won't even go into reverse. The shifter will, but the transmission won't. It's almost like its not catching. I don't know a lot about auto transmissions, but I know it doesn't catch like a manual. It's a fluid connection or something of the sort. And I don't want to overhaul, if I can find a better transmission for a decent price. Does anyone know of an easy upgradeable auto transmission? Well no need to worry about that hard top now, huh?

Computer not Jeep problem

Best upgrade I know of is the AW4 from a Cherokee, it has the OD 4th gear. It's a bit longer, so you may need new driveshafts, and has it's own computer so you'll have to make it work with the YJ computer. The tailhousing will need to be drilled to correctly clock the transfer case. Other than that it's a piece of cake. No 'simple' bolt-in upgrade that I know of.

How would I make the computer for the AW4 work with the YJ's computer? And I don't think I'd be comfortable with me drilling my tailhousing, would a transmission shop do that? Thanks Bounty.

If you're willing to use a transmission shop, better just have the stock transmission repaired. It may not need rebuilt, just serviced.

I don't think a transmission shop would drill the output housing like you need it.

I think that the NV... from the newer Jeeps is suppose to bolt on. Talk to that guy that is selling the trannies in the "for sale" fourm or I can get you his email. He said that they are a lot stronger, but a bit more expensive than the AX15. -al

I'm hoping that it just needs to be serviced, b/c I don't want it to be out long enough for me to do a swap. I'm taking it in to the shop tomorrow, so cross your fingers for me!

does it slip when u put it in gear and give it gas? if its slipping they your probably not getting fluid to the clutch plates, if its no doing anything your deffinaly not gettin gfluid to the clutches, did it jsut start happening suddenly or has there been a problem with it? if your going to swap out the trans i suggest a jeaper trans,t here warantee is unbeatable,a nd they guarantee for 3 years/36k miles. i just blew up my trans and there paying for it to be replaced, and sending me a new unit, no out of pocket money for me so im happy

Overdrive Rattle

Just got the news back from the transmission shop. Around $1100 for a new Jasper trans, and $310 for install. That really sucks  . I was hoping it just needed to be serviced. I'm taking it to another shop to get a second opinion, maybe this guy was just jerkin my chain. :?

Definetely take it to several shops. Don;t thell the second shop what the first shop told you. Wow, that is a lot of money. Try too find a used transmission. That will save you some $$$.

Yeah, go to another shop and ask what they would charge to rebuild yours and what kind of time frame you would be looking at. The 999/32RH are good transmissions, I wouldn't swap to something else unless you're doing an engine swap or you want to change to a manual. You might want to think about going wiith a large external cooler on the next one, and definitely have the factory cooler and torque converter(if you don't replace it) flushed before you put them to your new transmission. That transmission really needs to have a shift-kit put in it if you're going to run it with larger tires.

Jasper lists the 32RH on their website for just a couple of bucks shy of $1200. Jasper builds good stuff, but that seems a little steep.

its around 1200 but 300 of that is a core charge for the old unit, so its only about 900 bucks, not really a bad deal

I've pretty much decided to replace the trans. b/c I bought it used, and the guy before me wheeled, and probably beat the sh*t out of it. If I drop it in myself, would I still be able to get the warranty with Jaspers transmissions, or do I have to have a shop to do it?

Has anyone ever done business with a place that rebuilds transmissions online? Or does anyone know of a reputable place to buy rebuilt transmissions online? Either way I need to get some feedback about rebuilt transmissions.

I met a guy in Gardendale that does race transmissions. He lives in North AL. You can give him a try. He said he would do my TH400 for $400. I don't know if that was with parts or what. You pull it and bring it to him.
There are others in the B'ham area that will do that also. Call the guy that I told you to call about the bumpers and he can tell you some people.
Better get it done before the Spring ride at Gray Rock. I'll be there looking for you.
