Quadra-trac/gear reduction seal

I topped off the fluid level in my gear reduction unit today & found it took approx. 2.5 quarts to fill it which is what the manual says it holds. I then proceeded to remove the fill plug on the Quadra-trac only to have fluid come rushing out.
I'm assuming the seal between the reduction unit & transfer case is toast and permitted the fluid to flow into the transfer case causing an over full level.
If this is the case (I know I should fix it but until then) is it tollerable for the quadra trac to be over filled or is it better to let the reduction unit run low?
I have a date at the dunes with some other 4x4s coming up real soon & my not have time to replace this seal.

There is no seal between the reduction unit and the rest of the case. In fact, there are big holes. If you filled the reduction unit with 2.5 quarts then you flooded the case and yes, it should shoot out the fill hole when opened. The whole case takes 2.5 quarts total, including reduction unit. You only have to put a little fluid in the reduction unit to prime it. Fluid should circulate up there naturally from the case.

Thanks Jay! I was worried I had a problem there that was going to need attention right away.
There is a 4x4 Jambore coming up at the end of March at Lil'Sahara State Park, Waynoka, Oklahoma that I'm planning on attending so I am trying to get my CJ dune ready. :)

No problem. I don't actually have the reduction unit on mine, but I have taken apart a case with one. Good luck getting the thing in shape for the ride.

PS. I think you have your axles switched in your sig. Stock CJs had AMC 20 axles in the rear and Dana 30's up front.

Thanks again Jay for pointing out the typo error.
I've only a few things to do to lighten up the CJ such as changeout the tops, remove the spare carrier, remove back seat, etc. before I load up for the trip.
I don't have the best tires for duning so I'm going to remove as much weight as possible to help her out.
Future plans will include extra wide floatation tires/rims for this type of offroading. I'm only 140 miles from Waynoka, Okla. which has approx. 1500 acres of some fantastic sand dunes & trails so I'll be roosting up some sand here often. We have a smaller off road park closer for some mud bogging, rock & hill climbing.
