Ok. I'll try to give you all the info before the question.

Mid 70's CJ5 tub. Custom tube frame. Dodge 5.2 v8, NP3500 Trans. Front and rear axles from a 99 Grand Cherokee.

The Engine/Trans acme with an NP231 xfer case. I have an NP242 from the 99 Grand Cherokee. Can I mount the 242 to the 3500? Yes, same bolt pattern.

Will it work in the combo described?

Does the 242 require electronics to function?

If not, I've got an NP242 for sale.

Thanks,

You can't use the 242 unless you swap input shafts between the 2 transfer cases so it'll bolt up.

The 231 will handle more torque than the 242 so it may be a better option behind the v8, especially if you're happy with the skinny pedal. If the 231 came from the factory behind the v8, it likely has the strong internals like 6-gear planetary and wide chain setup.

isn't the 242 6 gear planetary interchangable with a 5 gear in a reg. 231?

Possibly, I would have to look at them. Although I've never seen a 5gear planetary, only 3,4, and 6. I would think 5 would cause a balance issue.
