Newer Year Engine

I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee Laredo with a 4.0 High Output engine. Great car, unfortunately #1 Connecting broke and punched a 4" hole in the side of the block. I'm checking out used engines on Ebay. My question is, will a newer year engine with the same vin# work? My vin is an "S". So are the other engines I'm checking out. I understand that I may have to change some bolt on parts (i.e. manifolds, distributor). I plan on using all the OEM parts that I have anyway. Are there any major differences in the engine itself and will it work? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

If it is out of another G cherokee, yes. definatly. If it is out of a YJ or XJ or TJ, it will work but, the manifold design is a little different. might contact the hood or some other issue. I honestly can't recall, but I remember hearing of this from a gentleman that worked at jeep speed. But if your lod manifold is fine, which it sounds, a good bottom half block would be perfect, just swap over the manifolds.
