well , my $2400 yj with 147000 miles on crapped out this weekend. was getting some crankshaft noise on cold starts and after heating up, oil pressure would drop to almost nothing.hasent lost much power but could tell there was a problem.

while i had the transmission pulled for a new clutch , i decided the ask my local mechanic about my worries. he said drop the pan and grab a handful piston and see if it had any slop. man did it ever. looks like a new motor for odax............ :-( [addsig]

priced a rebuild kit today for the 4.2, $469.........havent torn into it yet so not sure what i am going to find . someone had done a quick fix before and put in oversized bearings . the first one i took of , wow it was a wonder it hadent already slipped. so will find out in a couple days.think i will go back with as much stock 4.2 as i can and spend the $$$ on ignition upgrade and other little things that will make more bang for the buck and still be reliable.

have been down that road before with motorcycles . sure beefy motors are ok but you build them for a reason . to play hard , well that usually dosent last long without problems. still studying what to do............. :-D [addsig]

147000 miles? Damn thats nothing. I just recently picked up a 1976 Monte carlo for $300. The engine(350) has 261,000 miles....and it still runs, no funny noises. Does smoke some though (cough)...but hey so do I hehe.[addsig]

Yeah, 147,000 isnt all that much. My old 1988 Ford F-150 2wd had 248,000 on the clock when I sold her for my jeep (that 300 straight 6 was the sh|t) and my dads 1997 Ford Escort had 179,000 on it when he traded it in for his Tahoe.

depending on how much slop you have... you can bore it and get new pistons... it will give you some more dispacement, therefore more power... or you can get a 4.2 crank and rods to add even more... i'd take that as an opportunity

was not bragging about the miles. dont know who owned her before i bought her , but i di know she was not taken care off. which is obvious by the things i have done.

as far as reliable motors , i just sold a 85 asto v-6 with 303600 with a only a top end rebuild and two rear ends. was my work van, had no need to keep it. now i whish i had it back . i would drop the v-6 in there and go . but , dont think i will keep this jeep many years before i upgrade. this is my first jeep and it is a big and so far expensive experiment. will learn from this jeep so the next will come a little easier. and thanks for the input i am all ears..........odax  [addsig]
