I am in the process of putting a 2001 Jeep Cherokee back on the road after it has sat for about a year. The alternator was seized and I had to have it rebuild. I have put in fresh gas and oil, and was able to get the jeep running, but there seems to be a knocking sound coming from the AC compressor. I loosened the belt and the pulley on the compressor is very loose. Should it be so loose?

do I need to replace the whole compressor? Or can i just replace the pulley and bearing? I have never had to replace an AC compressor before, I would imagine that is a job that a professional should do, with it being pressurized refrigerant and all.

Sounds like you should replace the clutch/pulley assembly. I think there's a special tool for removal that you can rent at the auto parts stores.

That's what I am leaning towards, but I am getting mixed information from a few different forums. Some people say it can be done, some say it cannot. I am also being told that if it can be done the system needs to be drained of it's refrigerant and recharged.

Any thoughts on that? Anyone ever changed the clutch/pulley assembly that can offer dome insight?
