mystery rattle

I am trying to track down a rattle on my '99 wrangler 4 cyl. I think it may be the air filter box which is bolted to the body. It is held by 3 bolts and nuts which are tight but the box moves around. Is this normal?

No the box should not move. If you could make it rattle that would be it.

Have you narrowed the rattle down to that area? Exhaust is probably the #1 cause of rattles.

I replaced the worn out grommets on the air filter box and secured to the body.It definitely reduced some noise but not the main one which sounds like heavy metal to metal. I will keep searching. Thanks for you help. Still looking up.

As mentioned above. The Exhaust hitting oil pan Is a rattle I get if the exhaust loosens or is not seated correct. It happens only on starting and hard pullouts.

Engine mount?

Heat shield intake area or above the CAT
