my cj wont start!!!!!

i have an 83 cj7, i went outside this morning to start it up to take it into the shop for a tune up and it wont start. It turns over fine and I got plenty of juice, but it wont catch. I always have to give it gas but it wouldnt help today. I could smell the gas but im guessing its just from pumping the gas pedal. I know my carb sucks and I think it might be the carb giving me the trouble but does anyone have any ideas? Keep in mind im a college student with no money so any repairs have to be inexpensive, thanks

Perhaps you gave it too much gas and it flooded the plugs? Try holding the gas pedal to the floor while cranking it for 5 seconds at a time wait 5 seconds and try again ( keep the pedal floored)
