More Air, Please

Ok, since I installed the K&N drop in a few weeks back, the YJ has run a bit better, but most of the time, I can feel it starting to bog down when I step on the skinny pedal, and it really feels like it's starving for air. I opened the hood yesterday and watched the airbox while I revved the engine, and could see the sides sucking in!! So, I picked up a couple of spare PVC parts from work to make a second intake in the airbox. I'm using 1.5" PVC fittings, which means I have to drill a 2" hole in the box. I'll use a female adapter with a 90* fitting turned down in front outside the box, screwed into a male adapter inside the box.

Any ideas on this from the audience of experts? I'll post pics as I go.

might as well take it out the side and up the edge of the windsheild to make a snorkel. Then you could make a cap for the stock hole when you need the snorkel.

Thats what I was going to say. ARB also sells their snorkel heads seperate if you want a more finished look.

The guy I bought my YJ from had a pvc snorkel on his last Jeep, it had a pvc cap that looked and worked pretty well.

The ARB one would definately give a cleaner look, but at a higher $$$

On the YJs I thought there was some kind of baffle in the air intake hole of the air box. Just knock it out and get twice as much air into the box.

I'm sure SW did that long ago...

Yuppers....Sparky is no longer baffled!:purple:

I'll eventually go with a snorkel, but not out of PVC, I think that would look kinda tacky. As it turns out, there wasn't enough room at the front of the airbox for the 90* fitting, so I temporarily have it just straight through with the two other fittings.....took me all of 5 minutes to do, and I could tell a difference already.

One question about the K&N: Is it normal for it to suck up into the lid of the airbox? All my other filters stayed put in the bottom portion, but the K&N seems to want to always stick in the lid.

It sounds like there is something awry with your filter. The sides of the box shouldn't be sucking in nor should the filter be stuck in the top. Have you got too much oil on the K&N or do you think you may have got a faulty one? If you still have a paper filter, you might put that back in and see if you still have the problem.

I was thinking about that on the way home tonight, that perhaps there isn't good flow through the filter. I haven't oiled it, it came pre-oiled from the factory, so I don't know if it's got too much or not....none drips out or anything. I was reading last night about K&N filters, and apparently on some models of vehicle, the K&N is actually supposed to be placed in the top of the airbox, but it didn't specify which ones.

I do have the paper filter from when I made the switch, and it only had a few hundred miles on it, so I'll try that to see if there's a difference.

Actually, the YJ airbox doesn't have the baffle in the airbox itself, it's in the intake tube between the airbox and TB, and I've taken that out long, long ago.

What motor do you have and if it's a 4 cylinder does it have the same airbox as a 4.0L? The K&N for my 4.0L can't suck up into the airbox lid because when the lid is on, it's sandwiched inbetween the lid and the box holding it in place.....mabye you have the wrong one?

No, it's still sandwiched in there, it just sticks to the lid. Not really "sucked into it".
