Manual Transmission Drain & Fill plug Location

After gearing up to change the fluids in the Trans., and Transfer case in my

99TJ, I noticed that they aren`t clearly visible. (what is that one plug that

has a wire lead through it?). Anyway, do you have to remove the skid plate

-trans. mount to access the drain and fill plugs? If so, where is the best place

to place a jack to hold the trans. and tranfer case up while the mount is

removed?

Hey I just got done doing this myself. Its not that hard. The transmission drain plug is on the passengers side of the vehicle, it is brass and its almost even with the front of the skid plate. The fill plug is on the drivers side, it is higher up, (even with a black plastic thing with a small tube on it). Both are 15/16" hexagonal bolts. The transfer case is just as easy, if you look at it from the rear, you will see two 3/8" allen wrench plugs, they are on the left, staggered a little. If you want you can remove the skid plate by first removing the 4 small (i think 1/2") nuts in the center, and then jacking the transmission up enough to take the pressure off of the skid plate. I jacked mine up by the lowest point on the front of the transmission. Now you can remove the 6 bolts holding up the skid plate. Jeep did well on the skid plate, its pretty dang heavy. I had to get a hand with it. The fill plugs are pretty high up so I used a small hand pump for both. I bought it at Advanced Auto Parts for like $12. I sont know if i could have done it without it but it saved me some time i think. Just for your reference the manual transmission takes 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil and the transfer case takes Dexron III,Mercon ATF. Have fun and good luck. [addsig]

Thanks for the help on the location of the plugs. Got the fluid changed today

and all went fine. A bit of advice for anyone else getting ready to do this,

I couldn`t find a pump in my area to change the gear oil in the trans., so

what I did was take a piece of vaccum hose and put over the end of the

bottle that the 75W-90 came in. This way you can stick the end of the hose

in the fill hole and squeeze the fluid in from almost any angle. This takes

a little while and your hands may get tired from the squeezing, but hey,

it works!
