Loud, fast rattle when in gear but stopped

When I am in gear, but say, waiting at a stop light, my 2000 Cherokee Sport rattles, loud (enough to clearly hear it over the radio at normal volume) and fast (like a drum roll), from the rear. As soon as I take my foot off the break, or shift into neutral but keep the brakes on, the rattle stops immediately. Once I put it back in gear or come to another complete stop, the rattle will start back up, as loud and fast as ever. I haven't had a chance to see if I still get the rattle while in 4x4.

Have any of you ever had something similar, or do you have any insight as to what the problem may be?[addsig]

You say it's coming from the rear....

does it do it all gears? or just in first gear when you're stopped.

It's got to be something in the drivetrain.

Does it make noises while driving at higher speeds?

Sounds like maybe the splines are jumping teeth in the rear.

I had a somewhat similar sound in my '74 cj-5 and it was the throwout bearing.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Good luck!!

It rattles in all gears, even reverse, and in 4x4. It does not rattle unless the car is warmed up, say after driving for 5 miles or so. The exhaust rattle occurred to me, but then it should still rattle when in neutral or in park, I would think. The car has an auto transmission, and I can't hear it at higher speeds, although it could still be there. I know that when I am in gear and just letting the idle pull me along, I don't hear anything, but if I break, the rattle will start.

Thanks for all the help so far...[addsig]

sounds like what my XJ did when the torque converter bolts came loose. Only did it in gear, and stopped. Could also be a cracked flywheel, or even a busted catalytic converter.[addsig]

My 2000 did that too, same exact symptoms, never in neutral or park, but when I came to a stop in drive. I still had it under warranty, so I took it to my friendly neighborhood dealership, they fixed it, told me that the exhaust had moved, a bolt came loose, something or other... The exhaust was in the wrong position and was rattling, I suppose, something to look at anyway... That one's gone, have you ever had a rattle in the front under the center console, not quite as intense, but same symptoms?

my 2000 cherokee makes a rattling noise from under the shifter when stopped at a light. I started playing around with it, and i found out that when it starts, i can barely lift up on the 4 wheel drive arm and the rattle will stop. I contacted the local jeep dealership and they said it was a common problem for the 4x4 shifter to work it's way loose on the cherokee.

Just digging up an old post. I like that search feature...

I read this post back in the day, and that does indeed work, when I have the rattle, I pull up on the handle, just gently, and it does stop... The question that I have is: what can be tightened to eliminate this problem... I looked under at the lever linkage to the transfer case, but could not figure it out (although to my credit, that was a brief glance after a 4 hour differential disaster, and a transfer case tragedy, preceded by an oil change nightmare...) Anyone figure out a way to make the rattle go away... I am getting a little concerned, since it seems that there is more play in the handle than what there used to be...

i have a 2000 cherokee have a loud rumble under seat at 70 mph bal tires new u joints rims and tires any clues
