Please tell me I don't need a new trannie! I'm having trouble getting into 1st gear, grinding into 2nd, 3rd is more ground meat, and reverse plays hide and seek! Ugghhh!Somebody tell me it's something cheap to fix!!!![addsig]

Not cheap but it sounds like you have a clutch thing going on to me. Check your clutch master cylinder fluid level. If it is low you may have either a master or slave going bad or gone bad rather. fill it up and bleed the clutch and watch the levels untill you can get it fixed. good luck in the hunt for the problem Tug[addsig]

What model jeep and trannie do you have? Try replacing the fluid with syn, it often helps poor shifting trannies.[addsig]

I think tug is on to something here. If it doesn't happen to be that your low on clutch fluid, my next guess would have to be that that syncro is going, but that doesn't sound right since you're having problems in to many gears. Hope ya can find whats wrong,

My Sandy ('94 YJ) had the master on her clutch go bad... pump the clutch (just sit there and press, release, press, etc.) until you feel pressure build up. Then try. Do that until you get her fixed. -Mike :-D [addsig]

I had a similiar problem with my 93 YJ but it would only grind in 2'nd and reverse. I was told my synchro's were going. We drained the transmission fluid and used a transmission synchro mesh fluid made for GM vehicles (I can't remember what it's called) and it cured the problem for the most part. It never grinds in second anymore and reverse sometimes.[addsig]

I sometimes have a hard time puting my manual transmission Jeep into gear, mostly reverse, but sometimes first. When that happens, I just let got of the clutch and press it again. That ususally works pretty good. I doubt you will need a new transmission, so don't panic.[addsig]

Depending on miles and engine, i have a couple of buddies with older (87-91 I think)YJ's that had those stupid peugot trannies (how ever it is spelled) and had similar problem around 70-90K miles, turns out to be a syncro issue.

I was having trouble shifting my ax15 a couple of months ago, and I think it was bounty who said I might have air in the hydrolic assembly, sure as hell, speed bled the system shifts like butter.

yup yup.... they've got it... combine all of the info there... SURELY drain the transmission as soon as possible.. chances are, you have the wrong oil in there... go to autozone, pepboys, or similar.... spend $20 on some pennzoil synchromesh fluid.... i've actually heard of transmissions saying "thank you" when people put that stuff in.... then, assuming you have a hydraulic clutch, fill your clutch reservoir with fluid, and bleed the clutch line.... now if all that doesn't work, you've got some money to spend....

to all who have trouble getting in reverse.... if you are at a stop, with the clutch in, put it in second before going in reverse, this also works for getting into first.... I sometimes have trouble, but when I do this.... NEVER do i get a grind or a tough time[addsig]
