I think i should be gettin a little better gas milage then i am. 12 or 13 mpg out of a stock 97 2.5L auto? Somethings gotta be wrong here. Seriously, i dont expect great milage, but i do very little city driving and it is a 4 cylinder, so id think id get better then that. I think something must be wrong... any ideas???

I've heard that autos do not get as good of gas mileage as manuals. Is this true? There are a couple things you can do to help increase your mileage. Gut the catalytic covertor or buy a high flow one. Also get a better air intake system. Then replace the muffler with a turbo muffler or glass pack. These will help a bit.[addsig]

Hey Green, I have a 02 TJ with a manual and a 2.5 and I get about 15.8. Ive been trying not to "hot foot it" so much these past couple of days and it seems to be getting around 17 now. I too am planning to put intake and a glass back system on it, so we will see what happens! :-D Romp.[addsig]

Something ain't right because even if I put my foot into it I get between 14-16 in my 89 YJ with the 6 and a terrible carburator.[addsig]

20.5 to 21 driving with a little restraint. But I usualy get more like 18.5 cause I drive like a bat out of baltamore most of the time. 87 YJ 4 banger! Tug[addsig]

Tug do you have any modifications done to your engine or exhaust to help you get that much per gallon? Romp.[addsig]

It sounds to me like something is wrong. I have a 97 2.5L but with manual and I get about 20mpg. Since I took
the air restrictor out, if I romp on it a lot, it'll go down to 17-18mpg. Is there anything else funny about it? Is it
sluggish? What mods have you done?

Check your oxygen sensors. I have a '95 4-banger with 4.88 gears and 35" tires and I get about 12mpg (8 if it's really windy out). SO you see, you've got to have a problem, because how can I get even close to the milage you get with what I'm pushin. If nothing seems obviously wrong, and it's not making strange noises, then I'd bet you've got a bad O2 sensor.[addsig]

The only mod ive done to it is pull that little restrictor out of the intake. As to sluggish, yea but that may just be the 4banger. ive only had it about a month. I dont know how it is compared to other 2.5L jeeps. I dont even romp on it much, if ever.[addsig]

Yeah automatics do not get as good of gas mileage. In a manual trans vehicle, when you take your foot off that clutch 100% (assuming a good clutch) of the engine power is transferred to the transmission and then the wheels. An automatic uses whats called a "torque converter" to get the power from the engine to the transmission. Its basically a fluid filled tank with a fan inside. The engine spins the fan which in turn spins the body of the converter which is connected to the transmission. The power is transferred through the fluid in the converter so there is always some slip...at low rpms there is a lot of slip. That is why you can have the car in D and the brake will keep it stopped. Automatics are a bit more efficient than they used to be but they will always get worse gas mileage than a stick because of the design of the torque converter. Some automatic transmission have what is called a "lockup" torque converter which "locks up" like a clutch does when you get up to highway speeds. If you do not have a lock up torque converter and you do a lot of highway driving your gas mileage will SUCK. Your auto transmission does have a lockup converter though...it might be malfunctioning. When you start off in your jeep to get up to highway speeds count the number of "shifts". There should be 3...the last one is your converter locking up and it feels like a shift. Another thing that I can think of is the fact that you dont have overdrive. Your auto is a 3 speed with a final gear ratio of 1:1...equal to 4th gear for the stick guys. That also could hurt your mileage on the highway.[addsig]

Don't know what problem your having I have a 97 TJ 4.0 and I get 20 mpg. But I put Borla exhaust , Stage 2 Chip. Try going with a different exhaust.[addsig]
