Airtube and K&N setup is half the price of those at Rusty's Offroad, and they increase power and quicken throttle response. Improved mileage is another benfit, if you can keep your foot out of the throttle body :lol: [addsig]

You betcha. Even cheaper to buy the conical K&N the correct size to slip over the stock airtube that crosses the valve cover. I'd get the Rusty's kit.[addsig]

Believe it or not, there is a big difference between the two! The K&N unit is made out of plastic and positions the air filter to the far side of the engine compartment and is a true cold air intake, (not drawing in hot engine air) that why there is that encasment around it. Because it is made of plastic, it will not absorb the heat the because plastic has less transfer.
I have a turbo city intake which is now called Rock-it, I like it, better than stock, but has it's draw backs. Made of metal, transfers heat, and places the filter just to the right of the engin where it draws in heat from the engine.
The point of these intakes is to provide cold, denser air to the engine to improve combustion, and also provides more air quicker by increasing the size ot the intake, and removing the baffles which silence the intake, but slows down the air. That why when you put on a tube, you get that whistle sound. I like the sound though, sounds like a turbo spooling up.
When I bought mine about two years ago, K&N did not make a cold air kit of a YJ. I think they do now, as soon as I get some $$ I will get one.

Your air intake temp will not change enough to matter, regardless of where you mount the intake in the engine compartment. You need to pull air strictly from outside the engine compartment to notice any benefit, then you see a lot of other problems. The main improvement is just to increase the amount of air into the engine. Don't pay more just for the name, but if that makes you happy :lol: [addsig]

You said in a previous post just to "buy the conical filter that is the right size" and mount it to the intake hose. Would that work just as well? I found a site called intenseperformance.com and they sell "Powerstack" filters which are the right size for my intake hose. I found that site because I found another web-site with an interesting article on the intake hose issue. Here is the site if anyone else wants to read the article

I read in super chevy (magazine) about a year ago and they did a write up on different types of intakes, and they dyno tested different models. Granted it was not a jeep or 4x4 they were testing with, but the plastic intake tubes yielded on average 3hp more. And the temperature of the air greatly matters. The colder the air is, regardless of 1 degree or 20 degrees, air is denser, the oxygen molecules in colder air moves slower, thus making it denser, think of water and ice, ice is denser, the oxygen molecules are not moving as fast, hence it get hard, heat the water over 212f and it boils, the boiling action is all those molecules moving real fast and bumping into each other. When the fuel atomizes with the denser air, it creates a hotter and greater combustion. (Similar to the idea a fuel cooler, but just on the other side of that equation.)
Have you ever noticed that on a real hot day, your jeep seems to have just a little less power.[addsig]

I fully understand the reasoning for wanting cooler, more dense air. Air is fuel, and more air in makes more power. Cooler air means more air in.
I was simply stating that it doesn't matter where in the engine compartment you place the airtube and filter, there is not enough of a temp change to make a noticable difference. Pull air from the cowl, that's a different story.

i agree with bounty... you can pull (some amount)CFM of air from one point under the hood and (same amount) from another point under the hood... the difference will not be noticable... i also find it hard to believe that there was an average of 3hp difference... because that is about all an ambient intake will increase your dyno numbers by. there are some intakes with a ramming effect... they will allow for a much better gain than an ambient intake because of the mass of air being forced in.[addsig]

I went home to look for that article and I don't like to admit when I am wrong, so I won't but... The test they had compliled was in differing air intakes, but where they got the numbers was on the different systems for a 2001 Z06 vette, which has the ability to have a higher hp difference in my assumptions, and the comparison for a 3 hp difference was from a "ram air" style intake and a aftermarket Grantatelli MAF meter and that of a simple airfilter change. But they did however state that there was a differing in the temperature between the metal and plastic tubes, but did not state the acual differences,
I drop my head in shame for I am almost wrong, and a very bad reader.
But what is more pathedic, I remember most of the info from a year old article, or that I went home and knew exactly where the acual magazine was. The wife hates my Mag collection.
