Help shifter wont come up!

Dear Jeep Gurus,
I have a 92 YJ. I am trying to change out my clutch and slave cylinder. I am unable to get out the main shifter though. I have removed the boot, along with loosening the retainer and releasing the spring. Now, from what i understand my shifter should just pull out. Well I have had no luck with it coming out. Does anyone have any ideas of what i could not be doing, or what i need to do to get the damn thing out of there. Any replies would be great.

Thanks,
Stressed out

Welcome to the Z.

You have to depress the lock collar inside the shift tower and spin it 1/4 turn for it to release. The spring will then push the lock collar up and out of the shift tower. The shifter will then pull straight up and out.

Or remove the 4 bolts and remove the entire shift tower.

I guess I'm confused.... why do you have to take out your shifter to change the clutch? Or is there not enough room to slide the transmission back before you drop it out?

just assumed i would have to remove the transmission to change the clutch and slave cylinder. Am i wrong to assume this? Dont know if there is enough room to just slide it back. Anyone else want to chime in?

nevermind i see what you were saying. No i have to remove it.
Still cant get the damn thing out though. Guess it has some sort of trash or rust or god knows what else. just gonna take out the bolts and see what is keeping it in i guess.

Once the retaining collar is turned and pops out of the shift tower, there is nothing holding it in the shift tower. Pull straight up. May take some light taps upward on the shift handle.
